Eve lore is like a tame b-grade version of 40k

What

I can't tell if you're trying to say Matt Ward is a good writer, or that Eve lore is complete fucking garbage.

Because neither choice is right

I have a bunch of buddies that picked up the last batch of limited edition Space Hulk they released, and even though we play games every week I have never even heard of someone actually playing it. (They are now in the WTS section of our forums pretty frequently.)

If you do, take photographic evidence of the game occurring so you can share it with others.  :rolldice:

Oh I know, but I have 5-6 buddies that picked it up last time and I doubt they've played three games of it between them.

Horus Heresy (decent game too) has the same problem.

I guess it would depend on what you mean by "40k sucks"

If you mean Games Workshop, He Who Shall Not Be Named, Games Workshop, some parts of the community, the fact that I will probably never be able to justify to myself the cost involved in purchasing and painting my own Ancient Rylanor Contemptor Dreadnought and Games Workshop sucks then yeah I feel you.

If you are saying the entirety of the universe and the lore behind it sucks then you are just crazy and quite possibly insane. Even if you can't get down with Spess Marines and the majority of shit that happens in 30k, by the time 40k rolls around you get some really interesting and entertaining characters and story lines. Cain, Gaunt, Eisenhorn and Ravenor alone are all super interesting and entertaining with some excellent stories behind them. They are all (for the most part) easy to identify with and don't really have any crazy weirdo shit associated with them (except for Eisenhorn LATER and Ravenor but even then they still struggle with the same basic shit most people do).

I've read a good bit of fantasy/sci-fi and what I dig the most about 40k is that, when you get tired of SUPER HUMAN INVINCIBLE SPACE WARRIORS fighting SUPER GIANT KILLING BUGS/GREEN MONSTERS/BAD GUY INVINCIBLE SPACE WARRIORS/ DEMONS/RELATIVELY GOOD PEOPLE WHO ARE TOTALLY NOT JERKS WHEN YOU THINK ABOUT IT BUT THEYRE ALIENS SO FUCK THEM, you can just switch to stories involving relatively normal people trying to get by in p much the worst time ever.

The thing about the universe too that I think alot of people forget about is the vast majority of worlds within the Imperium have NO IDEA any of this shit is going on. A lot of it is legend or myth to them. They get up, go to work, come home, eat dinner and go to bed just like anybody does. It's why it is so interesting. Its like one day your life is totally normal and then OH SHIT ORKS WHAT THE FUCK.

People complain that everything is so GRIMDARK but that is really just the stuff we hear about because who wants to read about a farmer on an agriworld?

What I appreciate about 40K and similar bleak future settings is that they're a total inversion of the Golden Age sci-fi tropes, aka the polar opposite of Star Trek.  I'm the last motherfucker you'll find hating on the Golden Age stuff.  I'd argue its optimism is precisely why those stories and authors are of literary importance (an upswing in reply to the bleakness of modernist literature, a return to the heroic, etc.)  I enjoy the ongoing conversation, the back and forth.  The Golden Age guys projected a future in which the better angels of human nature win out over the baser ones.  40K is the world where the other guys win.

You really can't go wrong with Abnett, Mcneill, Mitchell (Sandy not Scanlon) or ADB imo.

If you're relatively familiar with the universe and just looking for an entertaining read there is none better than the adventures of Caiaphas Cain: HERO OF THE IMPERIUM

Split the Warhammer stuff into this thread to keep the other one relatively on topic.

I will probably flesh something out a bit more then move this stuff to that so Neverlasting isn't burdened with the autism scarlet letter that is starting a 40K thread.

The horus herresy books were the best read i ever had but game playing wise warhammer is utter shit. It used to be that every army had it own gimmicks but now every army is pmuch the same except for how it looks. Even space marines have monstrous creatures now like WTF.

Couple months ago i gave everything i had to a mate and it was the best choice i ever made.

Yeah the HH series is great. Fulgrim has been my favorite so far.

Sadly I've never gotten to actually play the tabletop. I've read a ton of shit and would love to put together a small army but there is no scene for it where I live so it would be a complete waste. There is actually a GW store about 90 miles east of me but I keep resisting the urge as it would be a complete tease. I've contemplated setting something up in Vassal but I've never gotten around to it.

What I may do is put together a small DW Killteam. Maybe like 5 dudes, just to get the chance to assemble and paint. I also wanted to pick up a contemptor dread. I check out ebay from time to time to see if I can score a deal but havent pulled the trigger on it yet.

Speaking of Spacemarines, I began another play through of Space Marine on hard last night and man if that game doesnt have one of the best opening cinematics of any game I have ever played.

I wonder if Titus would have kept his chapter assoc. when he joined the Deathwatch or would he have gone black shield?

Because lets be real, that's where he ended up.

Space Marine was tons of fun.  It wouldn't be anyone's pick for game of the year, but there's something to be said for setting out to do something and doing it.  This is going to be a game where you are a space marine, aka a badass, and you are going to kill a lot of orcs and chaos and stuff.  And you do and it's great.

See idk but I've thought about that angle as well.

I look at it like, big =I= already had him right? So lets say they don't kill him for the not getting obliterated by the warp thing. Sidonus is dead and he has beef with Leandros, the beef with Leandros being his literal interpretation of the Codex which also happens to be an issue with p much the entire fucking chapter.

So assuming =I= actually give him a choice, why would he go back to the Ultramarines? Even though we will probably never get to find out what happens ( and according to the game creators their intention was for him to basically go rogue anyway) I like to think he joins the Deathwatch as a black shield.

On Istvaan III:

Maybe someone can help me with this as I havent seen anything that ties this up but: What the fuck happened to the remaining loyalists that survived the massacre?

Malcador sent Garro back to get ONE dude, Loken, but not anyone else that survived? I mean, Rylanor is still there guarding who knows what and if Loken survived surely at least a few other marines did? I mean ffs is been literally THOUSANDS of years and no one, not even Loken, has been like "Oh yeah hey we might wanna go back and see if anyone else is still there."?

Basically I want to believe that there are loyalist Emperors Children out there still being glorious in their purple garb.

As far as the Blood Ravens go, I hate their backstory so much. I mean I have a soft spot for them of course and MOTHERFUCKING FORCE COMMANDER gets a spot in my Deathwatch Kill Team, but like, what do you mean they just fucking appear in M37??

Like, no one heard of these niggas before? They dont even know who they are?? I mean what the fuck is that shit?
