A thread for great deeds done by great individuals from a great state!

A Pennsylvania teenager has been charged with desecrating a statue of Jesus after he posted Facebook photos that showed him simulating a sex act with the statue.

According to State Police officials, the boy posed for the photos in late-July in front of Love In the Name of Christ, a Christian organization in Everett, the boy’s hometown.

The teenager, who was not identified by cops, was charged yesterday with desecration of a venerated object, a misdemeanor. His case will be handled in juvenile court.

And in case you want commentary I think the charges are ridiculous. The charge in question, if not done away with entirely, should only apply to actions which ruin or render useless the item. Things like urinating on a church's Bible, putting bacon on a Jewish or Muslim group's kosher/halal food, etc.

if the law is general enough (e.g. not specific to any one faith) it's basically a vandalism statute.  If it's a blasphemy law, that's clearly unconstitutional (free speech).

Fucking Bedford. Let me tell you a story about fucking Bedford.

Back in the day I use to drive back and forth between Philly and Pittsburgh for school. I was headed back to Pitt after the Christmas holiday break one year and the weather took a turn for the worse. I drove a 93 Mustang convertible at the time so it wasn't the best of cars in any kind of weather when it came to keeping your tires on the road. As the weather worsened, traffic began to slow down. As traffic slowed down, the snow began to lay thicker. As the snow began to lay thicker, I started getting sideways every time I'd go to accelerate. Nbd I thought I've been here before Ill just take it slow and soldier on like I have many times before.

Not so fucking fast.

I'm coming around a bend outside of fucking Bedford when a State Trooper flags me down and tells me to pull over. I oblige because in the traffic I was in at my current pace he could have walked next to my car and angrily berated me had he been so inclined.

"Do you know why I pulled you over?"

"Uhhh no officer?"

"You were swerving a bit back there."

"I-it's snowing officer."

"I'm going to need you to stay pulled over until the weather improves. Do you have heat?"

"No officer the heater is broken."

"Ok"

wtf??!?

So I sit there on the side of the road for an hour at least. By this time the plows are on the road and slowly burying me deeper and deeper on the side of the turnpike outside of godforsaken fucking Bedford. Traffic is at a crawl at this point and the trooper is gone but Im good and stuck. I step out of my car to smoke a cig when another trooper pulls up.

"Do you have heat?"

"No"

"Ok"

and the motherfucker drives off.

About a half hour passes and I'm smoking another cig when I see a car that looks familiar. My roommate at the time also lived in Philly and he left an hour or two after I did to come back to Pitt. He pulls up behind me in his front wheel drive Nissan Sentra.

"Yo you stuck?"

"Yeah"

"Damn, what you gonna do?"

"I dunno, try and get a tow I guess (It should be said that, at this point in history, I had no cellphone or anything. Neither did he"

"Damn"

"Can I get a ride?"

"Damn man we ain't got no room. No room in the back and I'm taking (whatever the kids name was idk) back too"

"O-ok"

"You got heat?"

fffffuuuuccckkkk you

About an hour after that a flatbed tow truck pulls up in front of me.

"You got heat?"

"No. I don't have heat. I havent had any heat since I pulled over."

"Ok well, my shift is over so not much I can do, but Ill radio someone for ya."

"Ok"

And then he goes to leave. Fortunately for me, he couldn't because he had gotten stuck. His only means for getting out now was to pull my car up onto the flatbed. We get on the road finally and take the fucking Bedford exit. He informs me that the office is closed so the best he can do is drop me at the station with the car and they would work out payment in the morning. I was out in the middle of no where and my car was my prized possession at the time. The only thing I noticed about the place was the giant sign on the side of the building that read "Not responsible for loss or damage to vehicles". I decided to stay with the car, heat be damned.

When I woke up in the morning, the first thing I did was put the key in the ignition and put the car in gear. After rocking it back and forth I got her free and lurched forward into the parking lot of the service station. I went inside to square up with the station fully aware that I had 10 bucks on me and this was going to be more than 10 bucks. The attendants were cool about it though and let me go.

I hopped back in my car, tore out of the lot, and headed to school. Total drive time from my house in Philly to the Univ. of Pittsburgh- 25 hours 30 minutes.

Fuck Bedford

You deserved it for your choice of college. Anyways here's today's Pennsylvanian in the news courtesy of the BBC, though it might just have been Fallen, based on that story.

Police in Pennsylvania have identified a suspect in the killing of one officer and the wounding of another on Friday.

The suspect has been named as Eric Matthew Frein, 31, from Canadensis.

Around 200 officers are searching for Mr Frein, who police say has expressed a desire to kill law enforcement officers and commit mass murder.

He is described as armed and "extremely dangerous" after opening fire with a .308-caliber rifle outside the Blooming Grove state police barracks.

Captain Bryon Dickson was killed outside the barracks in north eastern Pennsylvania during a shift change on Friday evening.

State Trooper Alex Douglass was critically wounded in the attack.

Police sources said Mr Frein's jeep was later found in a swampy area near the barracks.

A judge has issued an arrest warrant for Mr Frein who was described as armed and "extremely dangerous" by Mr Noonan.

_77628967_023906944-1.jpgPolice say Captain Bryon Dickson was killed by a man who has hunting or firearms experience

The motive for the attack is unknown, but police said it is likely the gunman had a grievance against the state police.

Earlier police released a profile of the attackers, saying he could be an avid hunter or have received firearms training from the military or police.

It also said the attacker likely made regular visits to a shooting range to keep his skills sharp, as well as trip to the barracks to plan his attack.

A non-profit group has offered a reward of $75,000 (£46,000) for information leading to the gunman.

On paper, David P. Khoury's case appeared like any of the hundreds that make their way through Philadelphia's Criminal Justice Center each day.

Arrested for illegally carrying an unloaded Glock .40-caliber pistol during a May 2012 traffic stop in Holmesburg, Khoury was booked on felony charges and released on a $50,000 bond to begin his slow march through the cogs of the courts.

But that's where the similarities end.

On paper, Khoury's case appeared routine. Yet, as federal court documents now reveal, on paper was the only place Khoury existed.

Last week, authorities identified David P. Khoury as the alias used by an undercover federal agent working as part of an elaborate sting operation to take down a corrupt Philadelphia judge.

The Khoury identity was fabricated, his gun arrest staged, and the criminal charges against him set up - all to test whether Municipal Judge Joseph C. Waters could be induced to influence the case as a favor to a campaign donor.

Waters pleaded guilty Wednesday to federal mail-fraud and wire-fraud charges stemming in part from a phone call he made to the judge who presided over part of the Khoury case. That judge, Dawn A. Segal, has been pulled from the bench by the Pennsylvania Supreme Court, pending an investigation by the state's Judicial Conduct Board.

Asked about the Khoury case Friday, Waters' attorney, Michael J. Engle, said: "As I understand it, none of it was real. This whole sting was orchestrated."

While federal authorities have in the past turned to staged prosecutions to root out corruption in the judicial system, the practice remains relatively rare as the technique can raise complex ethical quandaries about tampering with the legal system.

When federal agents sent corrupt, fur-coated defense lawyer Barry H. Denker into the field wearing a wire in the late '80s to help convict three Philadelphia judges on the take, they first sought the OK of FBI directors in Washington. And the defendants in those cases were real people facing real charges.

Other times, the strategy doesn't quite work as planned. Hoping to catch former Philadelphia Traffic Court Judge Michael J. Sullivan in accepting a bribe to fix traffic tickets, investigators staged a fake citation for an undercover agent. Sullivan, who was acquitted this year on corruption charges, rejected the man's offer of a $200 kickback.

While prosecutors declined to discuss the specific preparations they took in creating the Khoury case, Patricia Hartman, a spokeswoman for the U.S. Attorney's Office in Philadelphia, said the FBI and federal prosecutors routinely consult with their higher-ups in Washington before taking on sensitive undercover operations.

"Depending on the particular circumstances of such operations, relating to the length, sensitivity, and the potential danger," she said, "approvals are required from FBI headquarters and the Department of Justice."

Just another case

For the local prosecutors who worked for a brief time in 2012 to put Khoury behind bars and the defense lawyers working to keep him out, his felony gun charges were just another case. Most barely remembered the man two years on. None were in on the ruse.

"I'd have to go back and look at the file," said Assistant District Attorney Ebonie Branch, reached last week. "I honestly don't remember it."

Same goes for William J. Brennan, a prominent Center City defense lawyer who at one point served as Khoury's counsel. He declined to otherwise discuss the case.

The public records of Khoury's case offer some clues.

Forty years old and driving a black Infiniti SUV with Virginia plates at the time of his arrest, Khoury told officers he did not know his address and had no phone.

He told probation officers he hailed from Louisville, Ky., yet the Social Security number he gave them appeared to have been issued in Texas in 1988.

He had listed addresses at a ritzy Rittenhouse Square high-rise and a sprawling apartment complex off City Avenue as well as a more modest apartment mixed in among Cedar Park's African and Caribbean immigrant community.

As for his case, when he failed to appear on his scheduled November 2012 trial date, court staff reported they had no address on file for him, and his charges were simply dropped.

But it was the events that came before that dismissal that prompted Khoury's creation.

'Anything you need'

By that point, FBI agents were deep into their investigation of Judge Waters.

He had attracted federal scrutiny for his involvement in a civil case involving a close political ally.

Investigators hoped that by using a campaign donor - who was by then helping the FBI's sting - they could draw Waters out and catch him in the act of manipulating the justice system for his friends.

According to Waters' plea documents, the donor, unnamed in court filings, first mentioned the Khoury case to the judge in 2012 and described the man as a cousin of a business associate.

Waters was only too eager to help. Upon receiving a $1,000 cash campaign donation from the same donor two years earlier, he had pledged he would do anything he could to help in the future.

"You run into a problem with any of your people, you get ahold of me," Waters is quoted as saying in court filings. "Anything I can do to help you or anybody that you're interested in, all you do is pick up the phone and call me."

The police report on the Khoury arrest details a straightforward set of facts. Arresting officer John L. Snyder pulled Khoury over in May 2012 for weaving across the center line on a busy stretch of Torresdale Avenue.

"When I approached the window, I asked him for his information," Snyder would testify at a later hearing in the case. "I noticed a black handgun on the floor mat area. I asked if he had a license to carry. He said no."

It remains unclear whether Snyder was in on the FBI's ruse. Contacted at home last week, he declined to comment about the case.

Khoury was charged with carrying a firearm without a license - a felony - and scheduled to appear in court for a preliminary hearing that July.

After his campaign donor's request, Waters placed a call to Municipal Court Judge Segal, who was scheduled to hear the case.

Identifying Khoury as "a friend," Waters asked Segal to "help him," according to Waters' plea document.

He also recommended a lawyer, Brennan, who would later represent Waters himself during part of the federal investigation.

Reduced charge

And while Municipal Court transcripts of Khoury's July 24, 2012, preliminary hearing do not contain the arguments lawyers presented before Segal, the court's dockets show she reduced the charge Khoury faced to a misdemeanor with far less risk of a prison sentence.

Federal prosecutors have since described her ruling as one without "a proper legal basis." But there is no indication that she will be charged criminally.

In an interview last week, Segal's lawyer, Stuart L. Haimowitz, said his client made the ruling she thought was right at the time.

"She believed that her decision was the correct one," he said. "Whether it was a real case or a fake case, she would have ruled the same way."

As for Khoury, all traces of the mythical man dried up after his case was dismissed. In the end, his existence was paper-thin.

These days, residents at his listed Rittenhouse address offer blank expressions at the mention of his name. Neighbors at his Cedar Park apartment say they have never heard of the man.

All that remains, it seems, is the manila court file that now sits on an office shelf in the Criminal Justice Center detailing his short life as a made-up defendant in a made-up case - a file now affixed with a single green Post-it note.

It reads: "Withdrawn - FBI."

Philly justice at work.

SHANKSVILLE, Pa. (AP) -- A flag that flew over the U.S. Capitol on Sept. 11, 2001, was consumed in a fire at the Flight 93 National Memorial in Pennsylvania, the National Park Service said Saturday.

Friday's fire in Shanksville destroyed the park's headquarters complex. State police and the park service are conducting a joint investigation into the blaze, whose cause hasn't been determined, the park service said.

Park staff completed an initial inventory Saturday and said that, in addition to the flag, the losses included a handful of personal items of passengers and crew, DVD copies of the annual commemoration ceremony and meetings of the Flight 93 National Memorial Federal Advisory Commission, and about 100 tribute items left by visitors since 2001.

Park staff saved hundreds of oral histories and a photo collection.

The buildings comprised the park's headquarters, with conference facilities, storage space and the superintendent's office. The under-construction memorial and visitors center are about 2 miles away and were unaffected by the fire.

The memorial in Shanksville marks the spot where United Airlines Flight 93 crashed during the Sept. 11 attacks. The plane, which was traveling from Newark, New Jersey, to San Francisco, went down in a reclaimed strip mine after passengers fought back against its hijackers. All 33 passengers and seven crew members were killed along with the hijackers.

A memorial plaza was completed in time for the 10th anniversary of the attacks in 2011. There are plans for a 93-foot-tall tower with 40 wind chimes.

Bra-fucking-vo.

Pittsburgh Researcher Found Guilty in Wife's Cyanide Poisoning

A University of Pittsburgh researcher charged in the cyanide poisoning death of his wife last year was convicted on Friday of first-degree murder.

Dr. Robert Ferrante, who hung his head when the verdict was read in court, faces a mandatory life sentence in the April 2013 death of 41-year-old neurologist Dr. Autumn Klein.

The jury, which deliberated for 15 hours over two days, agreed with Allegheny County prosecutors who accused Ferrante of lacing his wife's creatine energy drink with cyanide.

Two Philly women were upset when they missed the breakfast cutoff at a local McDonalds. The women tore up the place and beat a patron with a broomstick.

Having crawled out of bed just a bit too late, two women were recently caught on tape throwing a super-sized adult hissy-fit because they’d been told that they missed the McDonald’s breakfast time. When a man stepped in to tell the woman to relax, they went berserk.

As reported by My Fox Philadelphia, the incident took place in a Philadelphia McDonald’s, where an onlooker decided to whip out his camera and record the incident from its beginning. After loudly mouthing off to employees on account of the terrible misfortune, one man decided to speak up, telling the women to take a chill pill as the employees were only doing their jobs – after all, those were the rules.

Unfortunately for the man, this opened the door for the women to commence a full on attack as they took their frustration out on him personally. Needless to say, the women completely destroyed the McDonald’s during their assault, even throwing chairs at the man.

There's video at the website too:

READING — A Christmas tree that might make Charlie Brown think twice is getting kicked to the curb a little early after residents of a Pennsylvania town complained it was too ugly.

Reading's spindly 50-foot spruce drew the ire of residents who said it was ruining their holiday spirit.

Now a group led by the city council president is raising money to buy and decorate a more impressive replacement. The current tree is topped with a lighted pretzel, a nod to the area's many bakeries.

The puny pine was a last-minute stand-in taken from a city park. The city had planned to get its tree from a farm, but the owner wouldn't let the crews drive on the wet ground when they went to pick it up.

Officials are hoping to have a do-over tree lighting ceremony next weekend.

Treesus Christ, what a bunch of whiners. Also, Reading is a shithole but "at least" it provides Harrisburg with drugs.

Tom Lindenfeld, head of LSG Strategies, copped to a single count of wire fraud, reports the paper, for conspiring with U.S. Rep. Chaka Fattah to convert federal grant money to fund Fattah’s failed 2007 bid to become Philadelphia’s mayor.

The odd thing, of course, being that I am quoting a Georgia newspaper because I haven't heard shit about this around here. Oh the joys of no-longer having a daily newspaper.

ALLEN TOWNSHIP, Pa. - The man accused of killing his stepdaughter, Jessica Padgett, videotaped himself having sex with her corpse, Northampton County District Attorney John Morganelli said Friday.

....

He said he had authorized the filing of an abuse-of-corpse charge against Graf, 53. A misdemeanor, it means Morganelli won't be able to seek the death penalty because the alleged sexual abuse occurred after Padgett was killed.

....

Morganelli also said Graf had a marijuana-growing operation that police discovered as they searched for Padgett.

Different Allen Township from the one that gave me a speeding ticket, for those who remember that.

THROOP — A man decorating a gravesite for Easter died Monday morning when a headstone fell on him in Lackawanna County.

Police say Stephen Woytack, 74, of Scranton was the man killed at St. Joseph’s Cemetery in Throop.

The cemetery’s caretaker spoke with us shortly after the incident. He says Woytack and his wife decorate the family grave for Easter every year.

Ed Kubilus is the caretaker for St. Joseph’s Cemetery in Throop. Every Easter he can count on seeing the couple from Scranton.

“They tie a cross to it every year, the both of them. And after they’re done tying the cross, they stand there and say prayers and they leave,” said Kubilus.

RIP old guy.

Meanwhile in far eastern PA.

A female cat found in a foreclosed home in New Jersey is so large that she can't even clean herself or roll over, according to reports.

The hefty black and white feline, named Sprinkles, weighed an astonishing 33 pounds when she was surrendered by a family facing foreclosure last week, the Press of Atlantic City reported.

Internet Aristocrat just made a video about a local man (lives about thirty minutes from me.) I usually love IA's stuff but this one was honestly really hard to watch. I had to stop multiple times out of shear horror. WARNING NOTMINDSAFE WARNINGhttps://www.youtube....h?v=ccGsuD2O8KcWARNING NOTMINDSAFE WARNING
